SEO Checklist for Beginners

Google Search Console - This is a free service offered by Google that helps you monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your site's presence in Google Search results.

  • Before anything, sign up for the Google Search Console

    • It will help you monitor and troubleshoot how your website appears in Google searches.

    • Go to Google Search Console and follow the prompts to add and verify your website.

Google Analytics - Google Analytics tracks how visitors interact with your website:

  • It is important as it helps you understand where your traffic comes from, and which pages perform well.

  • Visit Google Analytics, create an account, and add your website.

If you use WordPress for your website, you will need to install an SEO Plugin - This is important because It checks text length, it ensures you have used keywords in titles, subtitles, meta descriptions, URLs, and more. It gives you a readability score and recommendations to improve your content for both search engines and readers.

  • Popular options: for WordPress: Yoast SEO or for Wix it uses Wix SEO. These plugins guide you through basic SEO setup, from meta tags to optimizing content.

However, if you use Wix, it has an Editor, so all you need to do is open the SEO settings of any page and enter the text you want to appear in the relevant fields (i.e. title tag, meta description).

Optimize Your Meta Titles and Descriptions - Every page on your site needs a unique title tag and meta description:

  • The “Title Tag” appears as the clickable link in search results (keep it under 60 characters).

  • The “Meta Description” is a summary of the page (under 160 characters).

*Both should include keywords relevant to the content and encourage clicks!

Do Keyword Research

Find the right keywords for your website:

  • Keywords are what users type into search engines to find your site.

Don’t forget to:

  • Include keywords in your title, headers (H1, H2, H3…), and naturally throughout the content.

  • Focus on long-tail keywords (specific phrases) that are easier to rank for.

Create High-Quality Content

  • Write informative, engaging content that answers users’ questions. Use headers (H1, H2, H3) to structure it and make it easy to scan.

  • Naturally, integrate your chosen keywords throughout your content.

Use Internal and External Links

  1. Internal Links: Link to other pages on your website to guide users and help with SEO.

  2. External Links: Link to high-authority sources relevant to your content.

Optimize Images for SEO

  • Describe the image for visually impaired users and search engines by adding ALT text.

  • Name your images by including relevant keywords (e.g., "best-coffee-maker-2024.jpg").

Fix Broken Links

Broken links can harm your SEO:

  • Use a Broken Link Checker to scan your site for dead links.
